Hepsoft’s journey

Hepsoft started in 2008 when I trained under one of Australia’s eminent Quantity Surveyors.

He taught me “The Standard Method of Measure”, and he insisted that all take-offs were completed by hand, (no computers allowed), the calculations often took longer than the actual measure using an old school calculator with a small roll of paper that spat out all your workings out.

All this information was then transferred to paper by hand, the first was the material measure sheets, where all pipe sizes and types were noted along with all fittings, bends, OBs, IO, LITs etc.

Then all the stormwater pits were added, then sewer manholes, access chambers etc. Then on to all the domestic water, Fire Services, Gas services etc.

Then all the calculations for trenching, pipe bedding, FCR compacted backfill (where required), then machine hire/usage costs, disposal costs etc.

Once the material list was completed, all the material constants would be transferred to labour calculation sheets, where all the particular Labour Constants would be added to each discipline, this was also particularly time consuming.

Part the way through that year I decided to create a digitalized version of what Stan taught me, which meant slightly re-inventing the wheel so to speak.

The first version I created took me approximately 800 hours, however, it was worth the effort, as what took me hours to complete was now completed in minutes and in some cases in an instant.

Since that first (looking back rather crude) spreadsheet I have transferred it into a wonderful and powerful tool to assist in tendering both small right up to large commercial jobs, and now dedicated software for Commercial, Domestic, Civil, Wet Fire and Gas, this keeps all the disciplines separate, which benefits your presentation to builders/clients.

As time goes on, we are continually making changes to create better systems and outcomes.

And we encourage the end users to provide feedback which we will assess and make changes if deemed necessary, if we have missed something, that helps everybody.

I completed some figures recently where I concluded what value of jobs the software has been utilised in, since toward the end of 2008 it has generated approximately 29,000,000.00 in turnover, in that time period I priced approximately 190,000,000.00 in jobs
